Seem Editing.
by poetic_folly
Seem editing is a feature specific way of modding your phone. Say, for instance, you want to change one thing, like have your speaker phone call stay connected when you close the flip, or change the display timeout options from a max of 20 seconds to a max of 60. With both those options, there is a simple seem edit which you can do to change the option in your phone. Many small tweaks can be done with seem editing--a complete map of currently known seem edits (compiled by Xlr8) can be found here. If you see anything on there that your phone currently doesn't do, but you'd like it to, then you need to seem edit.
But what is a seem? Here's a great definition by Manalive over on MoMo: "Seem (NVSEEM): SEEMS are storage containers for Phone Settings information...Each setting is stored as a single bit, which can have a “value“ of 1 or 0. Often, the “value“ of a bit is represented by a check box, Checked = 1, Unchecked = 0." This is what we will be editing--those individual settings.
We will use two programs in seem editing--P2K Manager (to download and upload the seems from the phone) and XVI32 Seem Editor (to actually edit the seems). There are other programs that can do this as well in an easier to use format (P2KTools, among others), but in my experience they are not as reliable and so I'll stick to the tried and true method--its also the only method I recommend.
Install XVI32 Seem Editor. This is the program we use to manually edit seems. It can be found in the MotoModder's download section. Its an easy install--not actually in install at all, you just extract the files in the .zip file and you're set.
You will wind up with a new folder called xvi32HEXED in your MotoMods folder.
Open P2K Manager. A side note--after a successful flash/flex, your computer will generally recognize your phone as a "new" piece of hardware, so you will be prompted for the drivers once again. If this happens to you now or in the future, don't worry, just choose the "Install automatically (Recommended)" option, your computer knows now where the drivers are. If you open P2K and the program simply says "Phone not connected" in the bottom left, then you need to unplug and plug the phone back in. This should prompt Windows to reload the drivers, as discussed in the previous note. Once the drivers load (3 of them), click the "Update list" button in P2K to retrieve the list of files from your phone.
Download the seem. For our example here, we will use seem 0032_0001 (a very commonly modded seem--many of the phones features are stored here). You will notice in P2K there is a box titled "Seem." In the "From" box type 0032, and in the "to" box also type 0032.
This is telling P2K to download seem 0032 to your ocmputer. Then click "Download seem." P2K will ask you where you would like to save the file to. It is VERY IMPORTANT you DO NOT change the file name from xxxx_yyyy, or it will not function correctly. Save it to your MotoMods folder, and hit ok. You should (fairly immediately) see the word "Done." in the notes section of P2K near the bottom).
Good, you have now downloaded the seem for editing.
Open the seem. Now we need to open up XVI32 in order to edit the seem we have just downloaded. In your MotoMods folder, find the xvi32HEXED folder, open it, and double click the XVI32 icon (purplish blue with numbers on it).
You will see the XVI32 GUI loaded. To open the seem, go to File>Open
and navigate to your MotoMods folder, where you should see the file "0032_0001.seem". Open it.
